Our History

It all started in 1908 onboard the SS Karanja, a ship that set sail for East Africa from the port of Jafrabad. On board was Fazal Walji Virani, an orphan aged 8 years old who was accompanying his older brother on this maiden journey. There were three stops, Durban, Maputo and Mombasa. Fazal and his older brother alighted in Mombasa. In time, Fazal established a counter-served grocery store on Government Road (now Moi Avenue) in Nairobi, Kenya. Fazal had 11 children (including 8 daughters) and together with the next generation they continued the expansion in retail and began what we know today as Modern Trade.

The Adventure in Beauty

Over 50 years ago, Mohamed, one of Fazal’s three sons, began introducing emerging European and US beauty brands into Kenya. Many of the established global skin, hair, and make-up brands we see in Kenya today were first introduced by him.

His first foray into beauty retail was under Our Price (1980-2000). After a successful exit, Mohamed, who couldn’t stay idle for long, started Super Cosmetics in September 2002, together with his son Hanif.

He has played a pivotal role in the beauty industry in Kenya. For example, he introduced L’Oréal Paris in the 80s at a time when the middle class was emerging and women were increasingly playing a role in civil society and the workplace. Through this and other brands, Super Cosmetics was building a following based on trust and authenticity. We offered women skincare products to help them face the world feeling good about themselves and stay looking young. Through L’Oréal Paris we started educating our customers on the importance of a Skin Care Routine: Cleanse – Nourish – Protect.

Today, we continue to work closely with global beauty players, including a number of strategic relationships to combine global and local best practices as we strive to bring innovation in Beauty to Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

In addition to our owned retail network, we represent a number of global beauty brands in the Skin, Hair, and Colour categories and distribute through the general and modern trade pyramid.
